AI-assisted vs traditional video production

A plain guide to a question we get a lot: is "AI video" different from real video production, and which should you use? Short version — the video is the product; AI is a way of making it, and the right choice depends on whether you need one polished piece or many.

The short answer

They're not rivals — they're two ways to make the same thing

Traditional production is hand-crafted per video. AI-assisted, code-driven production builds the video from reusable components, so once a format exists you can make more of them faster and more cheaply. Neither is "better" in the abstract: a single hero film wants the hand-crafted route; a weekly social series wants the reusable one. Most real projects use a bit of both.

Side by side

How they actually differ

How each approach behaves across the things that decide a project.
DimensionTraditionalAI-assisted / code-driven
How it's madeHand-crafted per video by an editor and motion designer. The video is built from code and reusable components (e.g. Remotion), so elements are precise and reproducible.
Cost behaviourScales roughly linearly — each new video costs about as much as the last.Higher to set a format up once, then much cheaper per video after that.
SpeedSteady per piece; a bespoke film takes as long as it takes.Slower to build the first one; fast to produce the next fifty.
Scale & repeatabilityBest for a small number of considered pieces.Best for a series, a recurring format, or many variations of one piece.
ConsistencyDepends on the same people doing the work each time.Built-in — the same components render the same way every run.
Best fitA hero brand film, a one-off launch video, anything led by taste and craft.Social series, product/explainer formats, campaigns, anything you'll make repeatedly.

How to choose

Which one is right for you

Choose traditional when…

You need one standout piece — a brand film, a launch video, a hero ad — where the value is in the craft and every second is considered. Here, conventional production leads and AI just supports it.

Choose AI-assisted when…

You need volume, cadence or consistency — a weekly social series, a daily format, product videos at scale, or many variations of one idea. Here, a code-driven format pays back fast.

Being straight about it
